Frequently Asked Questions
Pre Application
How to do a strand test?
We recommend a strand test for every application so that you can ensure your hair will react to the colour correctly and to check that you are happy with the colour results.
The condition of your hair and other factors can affect this so you might get different results each time, even if using the same DROP IT Shade.
1. Our ranges work best on freshly shampooed, towel-dried hair or dry hair (dry hair will result in a more intense pigment transfer) so wash your hair in preparation.
2. Select a small section of hair from the back of your head, ideally within the midsection where it's less noticeable. A 1cm-wide section of hair works best for testing.
3. Bleaching and colouring can be messy so make sure you get your protective gloves on!
4. Apply plenty of colour to the strand and rub between your hands until you are happy the hair is fully saturated in colour.
5. Leave it on for around 10 minutes after application before rinsing off. If you are after a more intense result, we suggest leaving your colour on a bit longer.
6. Rinse with cold or cool water, without shampooing, to avoid stripping fresh colour out straight away.
7. If you’re happy with how your strand test turned out, it’s time to start colouring!
How to do a patch test?
We recommend you perform a patch test 24 hours before dyeing your hair with DROP IT.
This is to test your skin's sensitivity and ensure you will not have any irritation from using the products. Different things can affect your skin sensitivity so we recommend doing one each time you are going to dye your hair even if you are an experienced at-home dyer.
What’s the difference between DROP IT, MIXED UP & GLOSS IT?
DROP IT is concentrated colour drops that you mix into your own conditioner. They’re fully customisable, so you control how bold or subtle your colour result is.
MIXED UP is a ready-to-use semi-permanent hair colour. It delivers a stronger colour transformation and longer-lasting results, making it ideal if you want a more noticeable shade change.
GLOSS IT is a colour-depositing hair mask that refreshes tone/colour and boosts shine in just 10 minutes. It’s perfect for enhancing colour between salon visits and maintaining your MIXED UP or DROP IT shade between applications.
Should I wear gloves?
Definitely yes to avoid having to scrub your hands afterwards! Our Semi-Permanents are saturated colours and so can leave a colour stain on your hands - wear gloves to prevent this from happening. Mix your colour together in your shrine mixing bowl with our eco tint brush and always use gloves.
Do I need to bleach my hair to use SHRINE?
You don't need to bleach your hair first, but laying colour over bleached hair will give you richer results. Each product page has a Drop Chart that will show how intense your colour will be.
Will SHRINE products stain my skin, hands, or surfaces?
SHRINE colour products can temporarily stain hands, skin, fabrics, and some bathroom surfaces, especially on porous materials. We’d recommend wearing gloves during application and wiping away any spills immediately.
If staining does occur, most residue can be removed using warm soapy water, makeup remover, micellar water, or a gentle bathroom cleaner depending on the surface.
Can SHRINE semi-permanent dye be applied to dark hair?
While SHRINE colours are more vibrant on pre-lightened or blonde hair, darker hair can still achieve a subtle tint. For bold results, it’s best to lighten your hair before application.
HOWEVER, depending on how dark your hair is and what you are hoping to achieve we do offer toners and dyes for darker hair types.
Are SHRINE products safe for my hair?
Yes! SHRINE dyes and toners are formulated to be gentle on hair, free of harsh chemicals like ammonia or peroxide. They are also vegan and cruelty-free.
Is SHRINE suitable for all hair types?
Yes. SHRINE is suitable for most hair types, including natural, coloured, bleached, and highlighted hair. The lighter shades require a bleach blonde base, but the darker and more vibrant colours work on virgin hair in different shades. Results will vary depending on your starting shade and hair condition.

Is SHRINE hair dye suitable for all hair types?
Yes, SHRINE dye can be used on all hair types. However, the colour outcome may vary based on your hair's natural colour, porosity, and condition.
How can I maintain my hair colour for longer?
To keep your colour for as long as possible we always advise:
Wash your hair less frequently and use sulphate-free shampoo.
Rinse with cool water to help seal the colour.
Avoid excessive heat styling, which can cause the colour to fade faster.
Can I use SHRINE on my weave or extensions?
You can! Just avoid synthetic hair. When using toners and hair dye, the best results are achieved on natural human hair.
I'm Over It!
Our DROP IT range is designed to fade in 1-2 weeks, however there are a few ways you can speed up the process…
Using a clarifying or anti-dandruff shampoo can help fade the colour faster. However, this can be drying to hair so we recommend following up with a deep conditioner to keep it soft and shiny.
Using warm water will help open the hair cuticles, speeding up the fading process by allowing the colour to wash out more easily. The more you wash your hair, the faster the colour will fade. Though daily washing isn't ideal for long-term hair health, it can help remove the colour more quickly in this case.
If you want to remove it faster, washing with a clarifying shampoo or using a colour-removing product can help speed up the process.
Results
What results can I expect?
Add a lot and you'll get bright, fresh color. Or add just a little for more subdued hues. Results last up to a week. The results from your strand test will give you an idea of what results you can expect.
How long do SHRINE toners and hair dyes last?
The longevity of the colour depends on several factors, including hair type, the number of washes, and how well the hair is prepped before dyeing. On average, the colour lasts for 2-10 washes, depending on the amount of drops used, before fading naturally.
The longevity can vary depending on hair type, colour intensity, and hair care routine.
Toners are meant to be temporary and help maintain your existing colour. Subtle and soft. They refine your hair colour rather than changing it completely.
Blue, or green tones can be more suborn to remove from the hair! But all colour will naturally fade over time.
This is not the colour I expected?
We always recommend carrying out a strand test before dyeing your hair.
With semi-permanent hair colour formulations such as Shrine Drop It, the actual shade achieved and the way the colour fades is influenced by several factors such as the porosity and condition of your hair and other hair products that may have been used.
We can’t guarantee that everyone will achieve the same shade, or that the colours will fade at the same rate.
PRODUCT INFORMATION
Is Shrine cruelty free/vegan?
Absolutely. We have never tested our products on animals and we don’t work with companies who do. Each of our products are 100% vegan friendly.
Is the packaging recyclable?
We’re proud to share that Shrine’s packaging is designed with sustainability in mind. All of our product packaging is recyclable, helping to reduce waste and make it easier for you to dispose of responsibly.
Our silicone mixing bowls can also be recycled; however, they require special processing and can’t be placed in standard household recycling. We recommend checking with your local recycling facility to see if they accept silicone materials, or searching for specialized silicone recycling programs in your area.
Will SHRINE toners and hair dyes damage my hair?
Our formulas are gentle and 100% vegan. While adding colour may cause some minor damage, our products are designed to be as gentle as possible.
The pipette isn’t working?!
Occasionally the pipette can get blocked - you can unblock it by either washing the pipette with water or inserting something into the pipette. If this doesn’t work, please get in touch with us at support@weareshrine.com.
Will shrine cover my grey?
Grey/White hair can vary massively in colour and porosity within each strand. Our Shrine shades work best on bleached hair because it makes the hair more porous and absorbs the colour better than hair that hasn’t been lightened.
Will my SHRINE toners and hair dyes expire?
We wish we could make our products last forever, however, we will ensure to make them last as long as we possibly can. You will find the expiry date on the back of your bottle.
Will the colour stain my clothes or bathroom surfaces?
As with any hair dye, it's best to wear an old shirt and use protective barriers around surfaces during application. Rinse any accidental stains immediately with warm water and soap to avoid permanent marks.
Can I mix and match SHRINE colours together?
Absolutely! SHRINE's customisable colour drops are designed to be mixed, allowing you to create your own unique shades. Just adjust the number of drops to get the intensity or hue you want (just remember to strand test to make sure you love it!)
Are your hair dyes safe to use during pregnancy?
Yes - SHRINE semi-permanent hair dyes are generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. However, as sensitivities can change during pregnancy, we would always recommend carrying out a patch test first and consulting your healthcare professional if you have any concerns.
I can’t choose between Ash Blonde and White Blonde help!
Ash Blonde provides a smoky, cool-toned finish, while White Blonde gives your hair a bright, clean look. Both are great for neutralising orange and brassy undertones.
When will an item be back in stock?
If one of our items are out of stock, you can sign up to a back in stock notification to be alerted by email as soon as it is restocked.
The restock alert sign up is available on the product page.
Can I use any brand of regular conditioner with DROP IT?
Yes - DROP IT can be mixed with most regular conditioners.
We’d recommend using a conditioner without heavy pigments or strong tones already in the formula, as this will give the truest colour result. The richer and more hydrating the conditioner, the easier it will be to distribute the drops evenly through the hair.
BLEACH
Why is it better for your hair?
Our Bleach has built in plex technology within the powder which replenished the hair as it works as a re-bonding agent! It also includes hero ingredients, such as mineral oil, sunflower seed oil which helps to prevent damage and has detangle and shine properties.
We always recommend a strand and patch test before use.
How many kits do I need for root bleach?
Shrine bleach kit is x2 uses per kit. If you are doing a full head you will need the full kit.
What is plex and why it is good?
Plex technology is a unique complex which aids the process of building bonds and works on improving the hair condition both inside and out.
How can I recycle my bleach kit?
Once you have finished with you products rinse both the Bleach sachets and Developer bottle. Once rinsed, these can be recycled in your at home recycling bin. Your silicone bowl is reusable along with your gloves that can be used up to 3 times. Once finished using please rinse and take to your local recycling bank.
I have curly hair is this suitable for me?
Yes, our ‘better for your hair’ Bleach is suitable for all hair types.
Tested and Salon approved.
Does this work on grey hair?
Yes, our bleach works on all hair types and colours. Finish off with one of our toners for the perfect finish!
What colour will my hair go after using the bleach?
After using our Bleach your hair should lift to a pale Yellow colour. Please note this will be dependent on your base colour, and if you have any colour / product build up. We recommend using on freshly washed hair. Once lifted to a pale Yellow colour finish with one of your Drop IT toners for a just-left-the-salon finish at home.
GREEN HAIR SCARE
Why this happens?
Sometimes semi-permanent dyes can shift green or muddy tones depending on your hair condition.
This is usually caused by:
- Applying cool-toned colours (blue/ash-based shades) onto very light or porous hair
- Previous colour build-up in the hair reacting with new pigment
- Hair that is overly processed or unevenly pre-lightened
- Because semi-permanent colour sits on the surface of the hair, the final result can vary depending on how porous or pre-coloured your hair is
- Mixing or layering shades without enough warm pigment to balance
How to correct green tones?
If your hair has taken on a green tint after using semi-permanent dye, don’t worry - it can usually be adjusted:
- Use a pink or red-based colour deposit
conditioner or gloss to help neutralise green tones - Apply a warm-toned semi-permanent shade over the affected areas to rebalance colour
- Use a clarifying or anti-build-up shampoo to gently remove excess pigment before re-toning
- Always follow with a deep conditioner to restore softness
How to neutralise green tones?
To cancel out green in hair:
- Pink / red tones - neutralise green effectively
- Warm copper or peach tones - help restore balance in very ashy hair
- Avoid reapplying blue, ash, or cool tones until the green has been corrected
How to prevent it happening again?
- Always check your hair’s level of lightness and porosity before choosing cool tones
- Avoid layering multiple cool shades without warm balance in between
- ALWAYS do a strand test before full application, especially on bleached hair
- Use colour-refreshing conditioners regularly to maintain tone balance
Top tip!
Semi-permanent colours behave differently on every head of hair - the lighter and more porous the base, the more likely it is to grab cool tones strongly. Building colour gradually often gives the most even result.
